Psalm 59:16-17 “But I will sing of Your strength; I will sing aloud of Your steadfast love in the morning. For You have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. O my Strength, I will sing praises to You, for You, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love.” (ESV)
How often do we get up in the morning still moaning or distressed about the day before, or starting the day with anxiety over challenges we will be facing, or ready to give up because the trials and burdens are great? I love David’s focus, that he “sings aloud of God’s steadfast love in the morning.” David was dealing with the ongoing trials of being watched, followed, plotted against by King Saul who wanted him dead. As David was ending each day, he was striving to praise the Lord and remember that God is his fortress. And as David was rising in the morning he was again focusing on God’s love and mercy that are still there, because God’s love is steadfast, firm, unchanging. God’s steadfast love is referred to again and again throughout the Psalms. Even in Lamentations, in the midst of distress, Jeremiah also writes: “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:21-23, ESV)
May we be encouraged to start each day remembering that God’s steadfast love and strength never cease. When our head hits the pillow, when we wake to a new day, and in all the in between, may we remember and sing praises to Him in our hearts. Be blessed!
