Do you find the cold invigorating? Do you find it irritating or annoying? Or maybe both, depending on the circumstances. How easy it can be to wake up to a cold morning and start complaining because it makes us feel uncomfortable.

But uncomfortable can be a good thing. We might move around more in an effort to keep warm, getting those calorie-burning fat cells working harder. It can be invigorating to go for a walk in the fresh cold air or go sled riding in the snow. And it can encourage us toward the comfort of a warm blanket, a cup of tea, and a good book by the fire.

God can work the same way in our lives. Life gets uncomfortable and our first thought is, how do I get out of this. But maybe it should be, how am I to work through this. The uncomfortable may be exactly what God has planned in order to move us a certain direction or get our brain cells working more intentionally. And it can encourage us toward the comfort of time spent with Him and the truth of His Word.

Was it comfortable for Moses to go back to Egypt and lead the Israelites? Was it comfortable for Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach repentance and grace? How about the disciples – was it comfortable when Jesus would say, “Oh ye of little faith?” Was it comfortable for Jesus to go to the cross?

It’s invigorating to see how God is working as we take steps of faith. Maybe our focus shouldn’t be so much on how comfortable or uncomfortable the situation, but rather on how God is working and what He would have us do.

Is it time to get out of our comfort zone?
