A question was posed over the weekend: Do you trust God?

Well yes!  Of course I know I can trust Him.

But do you really trust Him, completely? Will you step out, move forward, following His path for you even if you don’t understand, if you don’t see what He’s doing, if all the pieces aren’t in the picture yet?

Well, I know I can trust Him completely.  But I stand in my own way of living that out 100%.

The more we know about something, the better we can handle it.  Take a stove top.  If we don’t know that it can get hot, we will easily get burned.  And get angry at the stove for burning us.  But when we know it can get hot, we respect that about it.  We make wise choices and are less likely to get angry (except when we burn something on it).

The same is true with God.  Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”  Do we revere the Lord enough to search Him out, to learn more about Him and grow in our understanding of Him?  While we can never fully understand Him, He has given us His Word to deepen our knowledge, to paint the picture of His character, to guide our paths and save us by His grace.

When a chef is learning to make delicious entrées, he has to gather and read instructions and follow recipes, and keep putting into practice the knowledge and skills he acquires.  The same is true for following Christ; the more we read God’s Word, the more knowledge we acquire, the less we grumble at Him because we revere Him and know Him more, and the quicker we are to trust Him even when we don’t know what the finished product will be.

We won’t necessarily understand everything we read right away, just like we might not always understand a recipe the first time we read it through.  But we keep reading it, make the time to process it and think it over.  And when we read God’s Word we ask Him to make clear to us what we are to learn.

Psalm 119:97 “Oh how I love Your law [instructions]!  I meditate on it all day long.”
