I need an earthquake
To shake me until it breaks me down
I’m giving You everything
My pride’s crashing to the ground
Shatter my walls, let my kingdom fall
I don’t wanna wear this crown no more
My heart is Yours to take
It’s You that can save me
It’s You that can shake me

I need an earthquake. Chorus from Earthquake by Newsboys

As we just celebrated Easter, I’m remembering the earthquake that shook the ground, sending fear into the soldiers’ hearts as the stone was rolled from the grave, and Jesus came forth ALIVE!  I wonder if that earthquake changed any of the soldiers’ hearts toward Jesus.  Maybe they went into hiding for their lives because they failed at keeping Jesus in the tomb.  But if the earthquake shook them into a long reflection of the events leading up to Jesus’ death and burial, and whatever else they had observed and heard over the time of Jesus’ life on earth … did their hearts change toward Jesus and His truth?  That would be amazing to see any of these soldiers in heaven one day!

And what about now?  God continually allows “earthquakes” in our lives because we need them.  Do the earthquakes make us reflect on God’s truth and bring our focus back if our pride has driven us apart?

Continuing with lyrics (verse 1) from the Newsboys’ Earthquake:

Time after time
It’s all the same
I forget who I am
I take Your place
The bigger I get
The harder I fall
I act like I don’t need You at all

And one by one my bridges burn
Until I’ve nowhere left to turn
But it’s You who’s right there for me
And it’s You who writes my story

I pray that we do not lose sight of God’s truth.  Even though things constantly change, God’s truth never changes, and Jesus’ death and resurrection still mean the same thing today as long before when first prophesied: that He came to save the lost and to hold in His hand all who believe on His name.

This is what the Lord says – he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters… “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a wayin the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:16-19

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. 1 Peter 1:3-4
